Many homes in San Diego County were built decades before EV chargers, heat pumps, induction cooktops and home offices full of electronics. If your panel is struggling, it will usually tell you. Here are the signs to watch for.
- Breakers trip often. An occasional trip is normal. Regular trips mean circuits are overloaded.
- Lights flicker or dim when appliances or the A/C turn on.
- The panel feels warm, buzzes or smells like burning. Call an electrician right away.
- You still have fuses or a panel that's 25+ years old.
- Your panel brand has known safety issues or recalls.
- You're adding a big load — an EV charger, heat pump, spa, ADU or solar.
- You rely on power strips and extension cords because there aren't enough circuits.
What a panel upgrade involves
We start with a load calculation, then replace the panel (often moving from 100A to 200A service), balance circuits, update grounding, add surge protection and coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with SDG&E. Permits and inspection are included.
